Debt Helpline provides free and impartial advice
The Housing Debt Helpline Wales is available to anyone living in Wales. It will provide free and impartial advice from fully-trained and experienced debt counsellors for anyone with mortgage or rent arrears, or threatened with repossession or eviction by private and social landlords and face losing their homes.
When receiving a call on the helpline, an adviser will perform an immediate assessment of the situation, leading to either an offer of emergency help, if necessary, or a counselling appointment. One of two dedicated counsellors based in CCCS Cardiff office will conduct a full review of the caller’s situation and recommend the best course of action. The review will include help with budgeting, maximising income, managing rent and mortgage arrears and advice on dealing with other debt problems. If further advice is needed, a referral may be made to another agency, locally, which can provide support specific to the persons needs.
The project was commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government following the success of the Debt Redemption and Money Advice project which linked credit union services with free debt advice and support, which was promoted and administered by the Wales Co-operative Centre.
